The Department of Orbit and Oculoplasty at Goutami Eye Institute deals with the management of diseases and abnormalities of the orbit, eyelids and the tear drainage system.

Dropping of the upper eyelid (ptosis) is a common problem dealt by this Department. If the lid drop is very severe especially in young children, it can even lead to lazy eye (amblyopia). Hence correction of the condition is essential for functional and cosmetic improvement.

Orbit is the bony cavity enclosing the eye. The orbit can be the seat of tumors that cause protrusion of the eyeball (proptosis). The lacrimal system drains tears into the nose and could be the site of chronic infection (dacryocystitis).

Endoscopic Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR)

Treatment of Tear System Blockage – When the nasolacrimal duct, the tube which drains tears into the nose, is blocked, a surgical procedure is usually required. During this procedure, called  DCR, during which a hole is created between the tear sac and the inside of the nose.

Cases of dacryosystitis and other allied surgeries can be tackled through nasal route by means of endoscope. The advantage is that an external scar can be avoided.
